Classroom Management Systems

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a widely adopted classroom management system, especially popular with those schools who are using the Google GSuite of tools. It is a very streamlined tool that allows you to keep track of student work, organize your courses, and send and receive assignments, videos, and other resources digitally. Check below for some useful videos on using Google Classroom as a beginner, or as an advanced user.

Obviously, Classroom is a great fit for online teaching and learning, but it also has some built in tools, such as a discussion board, formative assessment tools, as well as integration with other Google tools like Forms, Docs, Slides, and Sheets.

Canvas

Canvas is another go-to LMS tool for us. We use Canvas to host all of our online courses. Canvas has a free for teachers account that has many of the needed tools we seek and need as educators with a simple to use interface. Canvas is a great tool if you want to create a course of work that is self-paced, with materials being released upon completion of a specific previous task. Canvas also has tracking features that allow you to see how much time each student has spent inside of the system.

Schoology

Schoology, another widely popular LMS has many of the same features as others, but combines many of the most popular features into one, easy to use interface. Schoology integrates seamlessly with PowerSchool, so if your school is using PowerSchool for its student information system, Schoology may be your best option.

Moodle

Moodle, one of the pioneers in the space of learning management systems is a very powerful system which has a full toolkit of options and even the ability to add third party extensions that further the functionality of the system. I would be hesitant to suggest this tool for someone who is just beginning to move their instruction to an online environment, especially in a short amount of time, as there are a few nuances with this system and a pretty hefty time investment and technical skillset to get things set up and running as you might want them. Nonetheless, this is a great LMS and is worthy of mention here.
