BTC Technology Cadre

The Beyond The Chalk technology Cadre is designed to provide attendees with ongoing training and support as they learn to integrate and implement new technology tools into classroom teaching. Technology that is simply placed into a classroom is adopted by a very small number of teachers. Those tools are often set aside if a teacher is not provided with adequate professional development that not only covers how to use the technology, but also how to use the technology as it pertains to teaching and learning. These tools, when used correctly, can enhance student academic and vocational skills while promoting technological literacy to encourage critical thinking, self discipline and responsible citizenship.

Technology is ever changing and in order for teachers to truly embrace its effectiveness, they must know what technology is available, how to use it and how they might be able to use it as a teaching and/or learning tool. In order for this to happen, teachers need effective professional development opportunities. This can only happen if the following needs are met:

  • Time: teachers need an extended time period to explore and learn technology. Research has proven time and again that the “sit and get” approach to professional development is not effective. This is even more evident when learning a new technology.
  • Hands-on learning: teachers need to have the opportunity to explore technology, create products and experiment prior to implementing a tool into their curriculum.
  • Sustained training: follow up, reflection and collaboration are key components to technology professional development. Teachers need an opportunity for guided instruction, exploratory time, implementation and follow up with either other colleagues, an integration specialist or both.

Google_Apps1The cadre will consist of three days of technology integration workshops focused on the use of Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and how these tools can be used within a school setting. Participants will be required to actively participate in the workshop activities and will be asked to implement newly learned tools into their own classroom or current role. The cadre will consist of at least one administrator, one technology person, and three teachers. This configuration of five team members will help to create a community of  users that can support each other as they work together to transform how technology is being used in their district.
